Recording SPDIF input

Hi - I have a Tascam 788 digital porta studio and want to get my recordings off digitally. The porta studio has an SPDIF out so I bought a C-media sound card awith SPDIF in nd installed it. I can select SPDIF in as the input in audacity but it won't record anything when I play the porta studio. The SPDIF channel seems greyed out in the sound card control panel and in the windows sound recording panel. Any ideas? Thanks
