Multitracking Problems with Alesis Soundcard

I can't seem to record more than one track using my USB Alesis IO2 soundcard and a mic. I'm trying to lay down some vocal ideas and can record one track fine, but when I try to record a second over the top, I get a crackling sound and the new track plays back at a higher pitch than I originally sang it.

I tried the same thing using my onboard sound card and a different mic and it worked fine. However, the quality was awful so I'd prefer to use the Alesis card instead. Is there anything I can do to solve this?
