No-destructive editing?

Can Audacity do non-destructive editing of mp3 and ogg-files?
I.e. remove a portion of the audio file and then save without recompressing, just copying the audio stream.

No - it will import the audio into it's own project format and on completion of editing you would need to export to MP3 - and this will create further compression.
IIRC there are some simple MP3 editors that will do what you describe (simple cutting) working directly on the MP3 - have a quick Google of t'interweb.

Thanks. It was as I suspected but I wanted to double-check.
The only one I know of is Mp3DircetCut which works ok in Wine but it doesn't handle ogg.
I tried google but didn't come up with anything useful. Does this mean there are no linux non-destructive (simple trimming start/end) editors?

I dont know about latest Audacity but I have found a gtk-tool that let you do non-destructive simple editing called
mp3splt-gtk. Quite ugly and a bit unintuitive but it does the job.

That's what I use. With the graphical interface installed I found it very easy (intuitive) to use - (personal taste?) - but yes, it does the job (works with MP3 and Ogg files).
