Can I feature audacity in an educational TV programme?

Post by SharonRycroft » Wed Apr 22, 2009 9:08 am

Hello,

I work at a Television Production company who make educational programmes for Teachers TV. We are currently workign on one about ICT and want to feature pupils using audacity in this programme. Does anyone have a contact to speak to someone at audacity?

Many thanks

Sharon

I would suggest sending a PM to Gale Andrews (one of the Developer team who visits these boards fairly regularly).

In the meantime you can read about the licensing restrictions on Audacity use in the Audacity site here: http://audacityteam.org/about/license

Thanks, Peter. I have replied privately to Sharon.

The GPL Licence is about physically distributing and using Audacity, so only applies in terms of whether Audacity can be used on multiple computers for educational purposes, which of course it can. As regards making any kind of a TV programme featuring Audacity, this is fine if a citation is made respecting our trademark and copyright. If you receive enquiries like this, you may use the following text in response without needing to contact me:
We will always grant permission in principle for showing Audacity in a
TV programme, but we would request if at all possible that Audacity receives
the following citation respecting our copyright and trademark in the scrolling
credits at the end of the programme (or elsewhere):

"Audacity(R) software is copyright (c) 1999-2009 Audacity Team.
[Web site: http://audacityteam.org/. It is free software
distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License.]
The name Audacity(R) is a registered trademark of Dominic Mazzoni."

The part inside [ ] is not mandatory, but the first are last sentences are, and
those sentences should be presented "as is" and unbroken.

If citation in the credits is not possible for some legal reason, then please use
Audacity Beta:
http://audacityteam.org/download/

and show the "About Audacity" dialogue (Help > About Audacity, or Audacity >
About Audacity on a Mac computer) in the programme, which will show our
trademark, web site and free, open source status.
If they require a permissions document, they can e-mail me direct.
