I've recently placed a streaming audio feed on my site. It consists of code that appears to fetch a universal Microsoft player as an interface to stream the MP3 signal to one's browser. (Can be viewed at
http://nunzioweb.com/streaming_audio-example.htm) Unfortunately it appears that some computers are nagged to get Microsoft plugins to make it work. Other computers seem to have the required codecs and play audio files as desired.
I'm wondering if there's an Audacity version. I'm thinking how great would it be for surfers to simply arrive and play, liberated from all those nagging plugin issues, most of which are clearly profit oriented.
Obviously I'm not an expert about any of this. Any information (about an Audacity parallel) is greatly appreciated.

We ran into a similar problem. All the convenient, easy to use streaming tools are Windows oriented. All our creatives, including the clients and agencies, are on Macs.

I think the trick is to find a system that is browser oriented instead of Windows. Then all you have to do is deal with the Internet Explorer 6/7/8 thing.
I'll ask what they eventually settled on.
Are you in love with streaming? What are you doing to needs to happen in real time? That takes special expensive servers and connections. Most people post an MP3. Those play everywhere.

This is not a reply to the previous post. I couldn't find a button that let me start a new topic. I followed instructions that I thought enabled me to download music from an Internet radio feed to my hard drive. I know I downloaded the music, because there is a lot less space on it, roughly equivalent to the eight hours of music I recorded. But when I went to find the music and play it back, on RealPlayer, when I opened the files it just brought me to the live broadcast going on then, not the music I'd recorded earlier. And forget Audacity -- its total lack of any instruction or user orientation is shocking. When I hit File then Open it just brought me to a folder called System 32, and a long list of unrecognizable files to its right. For the life of me, I can't find the music anywhere. It' s not in my Music folder on the C drive, nor in RealPlayer nor in Audacity (at least as far as I can see). Can anybody help me retrieve it? Thanks very much.

They warn you about insulting your host when you walk into somebody else's house.
It is shocking, isn't it? Are you volunteering to write some? Remember, it's an all volunteer organization.
