Recording using an iMAC

Post by robl » Fri Oct 31, 2008 5:51 pm

I've used Audacity on a PC for years and it's been great. However, I've now ditched the PC and have bought a new iMAC (running MAC OS X ver 10.5.5) and I'm now having trouble getting Audacity (ver 1.3.6) to work with Line Input (it's OK with microphone - but that's no good for me). I can't get it to detect streaming audio. Has anyone got any ideas?

<<<getting Audacity (ver 1.3.6) to work with Line Input>>>

Those two are really different. In Mac land, recording from the Line-In is a simple matter of selecting it in...

Apple > System Preferences > Hardware > Sound > Input > Line In.

---pause---

I record streaming audio with WireTap. There used to be a free, simple install from Version Tracker. They make and sell much fancier versions. I stopped at WireTap Pro.

You can't get a Mac to Play (streaming audio) and Record (it to Audacity) at the same time without additional software. There is a difficult to use software product called SoundFlower. You can get that from the Apple web site.

The joke is that SoundFlower will make your Mac sound system as unstable as Windows is all the time.

I also have a MAC (OS-X, V. 10.4.11) and was faced with the same situation, as a new Audacity user. I found that if you go to Audacity: Preferences, Audio and select "Software Playthrough", you will hear the audio you are recording. This seems to work only if you are in "Record" mode, but if you Pause the recording, you can hear the audio from Line In anytime.
