Audacity in UK schools

Post by Silverfin » Wed Sep 24, 2008 6:37 pm

Hi

I thought I would let you know about a project I wrote for UK schools which uses Audacity.

A set of materials called Bowland Maths has just been released for use in schools in the UK. It's a downloadable resource which is being offered to all schools free of charge (courtesy of the Bowland Trust and DfES), containing over 20 interesting and unusual extended projects ('case studies'). I created one of them, 'My Music' (not my choice of name), which is a cross-curricular project for maths and music. Students investigate some of the maths behind audio editing, and some of the activities require them to use Audacity. This means lots of young people (and their teachers) could be discovering and using your excellent software.

I made them include the source code for Audacity both on the website and on the CDROM version of the project. I hope I did it correctly - I'm not very familiar with GNUs and software distribution, etc. I wrote a simple introductory worksheet for the kids too, with screenshots, based on some bits of the online handbook, and I credited the original authors for this.

Unfortunately I can't find a way to link directly to the relevant bit of their website (above), as it's all in Flash. However, if anyone's interested in having a peek at it, go to Bowland Maths, click on 'Bowland Player' > 'Case Studies' > 'My Music' > 'View Case Study'

Hi Carla,

thanks for posting that "link" to the Bowland Maths site about the My Music project.

As an ex-mathematician (and now keen user of Audacity) it was very interesting to see an application of Audacity to develop youngsters interests in mathematical concepts - and as you say it may get some of them using Audacity too.

Good luck with your doctoral thesis - I hope it goes well for you.

BTW: the link in your signature does not work - it produces a 404 error, page not found
