You didn't mention anything about your computer or what kind of USB telephone you have. It's hard to help until you tell us that stuff.

I can tell you how to set Audacity up to use a mic (though you could have just read some documentation).

Open Audacity and click Edit -> Preferences -> Audio I/O tab. Here, you'll need to select your Recording source (I don't know what it will be called, you didn't mention) in the drop-down menu (95% of people have to turn off Software Playthrough also). Then make sure Audacity's input volume is turned up about halfway (the slider has a mic icon next to it) and press record, do you pick anything up?

<<<anything about your computer>>>

If you're on a Mac laptop, you launch Audacity and talk into the built-in microphone. Export it as a WAV file, open it in iTunes and sync to your iPod.

If you're on a Windows machine, there's a $25 Radio Shack microphone we use for just about everything and it works remarkably well.

But first, you have to part with more information. I don't like working in a vacuum. My eyes bug out and my ears pop.
