How to create stereo sine wave?

Post by musicfan » Tue Mar 25, 2008 5:41 pm

Hallo,

I have to create a stereo sine wave for a DIY project. The description is as follows.

We need a sine wave for coil #1 and a 90 deg offset sine wave for coil #2 (as I said, just like AC-synchronous).
This is often done with a mains transformer plus a capacitor for delaying the sine for coil #2. This is not really accurate and also not adjustable.
We want something better. So what do we do?
We just generate a 50 Hz (or 60Hz) sine wave on the computer using a music program (like cool edit), plus a second sine wave with 90 deg. delay.

I have been able to locate the sine wave generator in the generate menu, but have not been able to figure out how to manage this in stereo with a 90 deg delay on the second channel.

Please advise.

With Best Regards,

I've never figured out how to do this, but I do have an escape. My license for Cool Edit will generate stereo tones.

You might consider the 1.3 Audacity. That's the base for the about to be released 1.4. No doubt you noticed that Audacity woke up from the install in mono. The mono default runs through the program and unfortunately, the tone generator is stuck there.

Audacity 1.2.6

Open Audacity
Set the project rate to 44100
"View > Set Selection Format > Samples (Snap to Samples)"
"Project > New Stereo Track"
"Generate > Tone"
Select "Sine" "50 Hz" Amplitude and length as required.
Click on the track name (Audio Track) and select "Split Stereo Track" from the menu.
Repeatedly click on the "Zoom In" button so that you can see a couple of cycles of the sine wave.
Click on the "Skip to Start" button.
Click on the upper track at about 441 samples - zoom in as necessary to get the cursor at exactly 441 samples (the cursor position is shown at the bottom of the Audacity window)
Zoom out so that you can see the first sine wave cycle.
Select the "Time Shift Tool"
Click on the lower track and drag it to the right until the left hand edge of the track lines up with the cursor position.
Press Ctrl + A (select All)
"Project > Quick Mix"
Delete the first 441 samples.

You now have a stereo sine wave with the left and right channels 90 degrees out of phase.

I'm going to have to lie down for a while.

Is this anything like the 36 volume opus "How To Ride a Bicycle?"

Lol - I guess did give rather a lot of detail :D
put simply:
Create a stereo track and generate a tone in it, then split the track and shift one channel along a bit.
(is that better? )

Both versions are just grand, but the larger one caught me unprepared.
