won't show waveforms while recording

Audacity is working great but when I record there is a problem. After I press record, the blue line starts to display the waveform correctly but after about 10 seconds it reaches the right edge then proceeds off the screen and the cursor disappears. How do I make the waveform display window follow the entry of the wave form while I am recording?

I shouldn't behave like this - but a workaround would be to zoom out (use the magnifying glass icon with the minus sign) sufficiently far so that your whole planned recording will fit in a single Audacity window.
Note that you will have to start the recording before you can do the zooming.

Check that Edit - Preferences - Interface - "Update display while playing" is selected.
