I just downloaded 1.3.4 Beta and was disappointed to find the Tempo effect now changes pitch when I try to compress the file (time). The effect's info box indeed says both the tempo and pitch would change. I found a nyquist plug-in for tempo (tempo.ny) but it also changes the pitch as well as the tempo.

I loved the ability to compress audio speech files with the tempo effect without having the pitch change. Everything sounded normal in pitch, just faster. I haven't found a way to do this in 1.3.4 - is it possible.

Hmm... my Change Tempo dialogue box says "Change Tempo without Changing Pitch" and that's exactly what it does, so whatever is going on it's not a global feature of 1.3.4.

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad to hear it and that the capability exists at least in some versions. I'm using the linux version - I'll reload the latest release down the road and see if my favorite feature has been incorporated. In fact, I'm listening to a broadcast compressed in normal pitch at this moment (in version 1.3.3-beta).

I'm curious. Do you access the Tempo feature via the Effect menu? That's where it used to be in the linux 1.3.3-beta version. Now Tempo is not one of the options in there. I have to go to Effect, Plugins, 136-149, where I can select Tempo. Unfortunately, when I do it doesn't state anything but Tempo Change by David R. Sky and it changes the tempo AND pitch, resulting in a compressed but chipmunk sound.

Yes, it's right there on the Effects menu. I've never used the Linux version so I can't comment on the Tempo effects mysterious disappearance on that platform.

Just to confirm: "Change Tempo" (without changing pitch) is in the "Effects" menu for the Windows 1.3.4 version, but it is sadly missing in Linux v.1.3.4

I just started using 1.3.4 as I recently installed Ubuntu. The "Change Tempo" effect is present in some Linux distributions, and missing from others. It has to do with a library problem which should have been solved by now, as bug reports have been filed with Ubuntu and Debian at least. In Gentoo you can set the "soundtouch" USE flag before compiling Audacity and this plugin will appear, according to http://audacityteam.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1725

I'm not sure yet what to do about the missing effect on my version, since I use that quite frequently to fit a radio program into a 30 minute slot. I guess I will either downgrade or compile Audacity myself with the necessary configuration changes.

The Ubuntu Intrepid build of Audacity (1.3.5) works pretty well on Hardy (Ubuntu 8.04) and has all the time stretch functions working.

In that version, there is a bug in "effects preview" that affects most machines, - if you preview an effect, then cancel, Audacity may crash. The workaround is to apply the effect, and if you don't want it, use "Undo" (Ctrl+Z)

By 'that version' do you mean the 1.3.5 for Intrepid? I have 1.3.5-2~hardy1 and it also has the effects preview bug, but does not have the tempo stretch enabled. Has anyone produced an actually working audacity for hardy yet?

The Jaunty version (1.3.7) should work in Hardy.
