beginner help

Post by hazelm » Wed Feb 03, 2010 3:32 pm

A few years ago, I bought the ION Tape2PC and tried to start transferring my home-made audiocassettes onto my computer. I was not able to adjust the volume enough to hear the recording. I talked to a very nice helpful man who suggested that I use the Audacity portion of the software. At the time my husband was very ill with incurable cancer. Not only was I distracted away from my projects, my husband was unable to stand the noise of my efforts and my lack of attention which he very much needed. On March 14, 2009, my husband died. I have been going through a lot of changes since then. I am now ready to go ahead with the transferring of my cassettes. The trouble is I don't remember how and I am not sure I have the latest necessary equipment anymore. Add to these problems, I am 79 years old and need more help than the average user of this type of equipment. I would like some extra help. Is there someone who can call or e-mail me to help me get started? I would certainly appreciate it. Sincerely, Hazel Markham; hazelmark[AT]charter.net.

Hello Hazel,
It is not a good idea to put your e-mail address openly on the internet as the internet is rife with computers that automatically scan web pages looking for e-mail addresses for the purpose of sending spam (unsolicited advertisements). I have made a small edit to your e-mail address that allows humans to still be able to read it, but a little more difficult for automated spamming programs to read. Also, it is sadly unwise to post your telephone number for all to see so I have removed that from your post. I apologise for such "tampering", but in this day and age it is unfortunately necessary to exercise a little caution.

Now onto the business of recording.

Audacity has come on a long way in the last year and there is a new version available for (Windows XP/Windows Vista), Audacity 1.3.11 which I would recommend. You can download it from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_windows

Which version of Windows are you using?

If you want to get started right away, there is a good tutorial about transfering cassettes to computer here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Trans ... uter_or_CD

If you get stuck, just let us know and we'll see if we can help.

Do you have any video editing software? If so, does it allow you to export WAV files from your recorded video? (that's a job for video software, not Audacity)
If you are able to import and export the audio track from your video than we may be able to help you edit the audio with Audacity, but Audacity does not support video.
