having some trouble recording

We are trying to record with audacity but every time we press the button a pop-up comes saying "error while opening sound device, please check the input device settings and project sample rate". We are have much trouble and where wondering if there was any way you could help us, thank you

First we need to know what computer and operating system you are using, since you will likely need to make selections and adjustments in your operating system's sound control panel. Also please confirm exactly which version of Audacity you are using - look in Help > About Audacity.
