Can I audacity use as an sampler and creating a song with it?

I record guitar and uprightbass already. I want to fill in some bassdrum hihat ect..

Can I get the bassdrum under my spacebar and play it in the song?

Sure. As long as you don't want to record the resulting composite.

Windows machines don't make very good Digital Audio Workstations because of the delays. You don't notice them until you try to capture a multi-track performance and keep layering it.

You can tune out "latency" in Audacity 1.3. That's the delay between the recorded playback and the live performance. It doesn't really go away, but the computer can make it seem like it's not there.

Much more serious is the Live Delay. You can't ever hear yourself.

The first Audacity setting is Play Tracks while Recording New Ones. It's in Preferences somewhere. Here: Audio I/O. That's where Latency settings are, too.

The messy one is Software Playthrough and Hardware Playthrough. That's supposed to let you hear yourself, but it never works particularly well. For that, you need an External Mixer.

I'm fooling around with a cheap Peavey mixer.

Use a software sampler and a virtual keyboard.
Different programs are available depending on what computer you have.
For Linux you can use "Q Sampler" and "Virtual Midi Keyboard".
