How to change from .dvf to wav...

Windows XP Home
I have a Sony digital voice recorder, which saves audio as files with a dvf. extension.
Audio files are saved into your choice of one of four folders, which I've stored on a thumb drive.
I want to amplify certain parts of a certain lecture.
However, after importing the .dvf file from the thumb drive into Audacity, I get a "flat line", rather than the "fuzzy" representation of the recording which is supposed to run across the screen. There is no response when I attempt to play the file.
I've exported the same file as .wav into Documents, then attempted to re-import this same file into Audacity with the new .wav extension, hoping that then it might play so I can edit.
No luck.
What am I doing wrong?
I have noticed that there is a VLC icon before each file, once it has been converted to .wav .
I have accomplished this with other files from the voice recorder, but cannot remember how.

You are trying to import a file type that Audacity does not support - you will need to convert it prior to importing. Audacity 1.2 supports WAV, AIFF, Ogg, MP3.
You might try 1.3 Audacity tthe Beta which is now pretty stable and mature - but I don't know if your filetype can be imported in 1.3 - you will nedd the FFmpeg plug-in to make it work. See:

Thanks for your interest in my situation.
Having first IMPORTED the file into Audacity as a dvf., then EXPORTED the file as a wav. into Documents, then RE-IMPORTED the file again into Audacity as the .wav Audacity requires, why wouldn't Audacity play it?

you haven't, and can't, import the dvf file into Audacity - you need to convert iot to WAV and then import it into Audacity.

WAXYCYLINDER...how do I convert the .dvf to .wav so as to import into Audacity?
Is this as simple as right-clicking on the file, selecting "rename", deleting the extension and replacing it with .wav?
The file is on a "thumb drive" with a .dvf extension.

You need to use a conversion program to change the quality of the contents of the file. Just changing the file extension or name will damage the file.
Download and install Super or Switch (one of them is free) on your computer. Open your sound file in that program and export or save to WAV format. Audacity can speak WAV format and you will be able to edit your file.

Sounds great, koz! I was hoping someone had replied just now. This is nuts!
I'll try this, and let you all know how it went.
I'm just curious how I was able to do this before.
I upgraded my digital recorder software today, specifying that everthing be saved in MP3 format as it is transferred to the PC.
Too late for this little file, though.

KOZIKOWSKI...
Super is the one that is free.
However, it seems to be for video, not audio...
...or does that matter?
Ah...Switch does have a demo version.
Once converted with Switch, can this audio file be burned to CD?

"Switch" is a 14 day trial after which some formats are disabled.
"SUPER" is free, but I'm not sure if it supports .dvf (a pretty obscure format). (SUPER supports LOTS of formats for both video and audio and even allows you to rip audio streams from video files).
Sony supply a plug-in for Win XP that allows Windows Media Player to play .dvf files. If you're lucky it may also allow Windows Media Player to save the file in a different format or burn it to an audio CD.
