I recommend reading this wikipedia page on spectrograms.

Most Audacity users will probably benefit from the ability to find pops and clicks visually as described in this thread:

If you don't have any examples, you can generate some silence in Audacity, zoom way in, and use the pencil tool to drag a single sample all the way to the top of the track. Then zoom out and select the Spectrum view. If the quality is set high enough, you should see a bold red line where that click is. Even if this click were buried in a music signal, it would still show up clearly in the spectrum view.
