Can't Record Issues

I'm new, using 1.2.6.
I'm trying to record from a standalone turntable. When I get into Audacity and attempt to record, the VU meters show input but graphic display shows nothing when Line In selected. When I go to Stereo Mix in, I get all kinds of noise after a brief display of signal in.
Into computer through a mic port.
Read all Audacity Wiki's / documentation, etc, I can find.
Nothing yet and I'm getting tired.
