HOWEVER, would be nice to have some fairly accurate idea of a release timeline, perhaps if it can be narrowed down to month or even 3rd quarter, etc.

ALSO, we can be assured that many of us would be happy to test and use the product as it matures to full release, especially in a late Beta or Release Candidate level.

I think the release of Audacity 2.0 has over-run slightly from the developers original timeline, but you can register for e-mail notification of new releases at the bottom of this page: http://audacityteam.org/

That's great, the feedback from real world testing is invaluable for the developers, but be aware that unforeseen issues can appear at any time during development, even with RCs. If problems do occur, they are usually fixed pretty quick and get reported on this forum, so becoming a regular reader of the latest forum posts can be an asset.
