Low level on recording

Post by dams » Sun Jun 28, 2009 7:50 pm

I've got a problem with Audacity 1.2.2 on Linux (rather old I know) with a SbLive card. This problam was that I get a very low level on recording from line-in (and trying to increase the input level saturate the sound in speaker).
I've found lot of posts about similar problem without any answer that worked in my case.
Here is the solution I finally found, in case it can be useful to someone else.
When recording, I need to put speaker level to minimum (0) and record level to maximum (1) in mixer. In that case I can increase input level without saturating sound (and I still hear what I record) until getting a correct record level.
Then when playing back I need obviously to do the contrary (out level to maximum and in level to minimum).
Saturation seems only to come from playthrough that is performed at a higher level than recording and saturate the speaker.
Hope this can help!

Which Linux sound control service do you use? We use artsd and it has both a Capture Level and a Line Level. Sometimes we can juggle between the two and get both directions to be better behaved. Also, we have one install where the Sound Control Panels follow the controls in Audacity, but only on Thursday. On Fridays, changing anything in Audacity's input service causes the input to switch to the wrong thing and die.

Although I use Audacity on all three platforms, I make it a point to wear fresh garlic when I use Linux.

I did not get such problem. I use either alsamixer or kmix and both shows same input/output level than audacity.
