The Audacity cursor

I've always used Cool Edit 96 and now I'm beginning to use Audacity.
It's my second attempt and I'm trying to convince myself that its worth continuing with. However one thing that really bugs me is that the cursor is NEVER in time. What I mean is that if it passes a particular point, say a snare beat then the snare is heard first then the cursor passes that point just slightly after.
I say that it bugs me because it isn't precise and compared to Cool Edit fails an important part of making a project.
Is this something that can be ironed out in Preferences somehow or is this *just* how Audacity is?
