Zero files will open

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version of audacity. No files will open, just get the spinning wheel until I force quit. Each time I relaunch audacity it give recovery files that have been autogenerated it seems, the names are dates, not files I’ve actually created. Nothing opens.

First try: delete the settings for your current Audacity installation. Audacity must not be running while you do this. You find the settings here:
~/Library/Application Support/audacity
To get there: in the Finder, select the menu “Go To”, then down to “Go To Folder…” and paste the line above (including the ~ sign) into the dialog. Delete (or move to some other place) everything in this folder.

Start Audacity and see what happens (you’ll need to re-create all customizations). If Audacity does work as expected, then your settings were screwed up. The settings are not re-created by just re-installing Audacity.

If this does not help: Create a new, temporary user on your Mac and check wether Audacity runs well under this user.

  • If it does, something in your user settings is wrong.
  • if it does not, there may be something wrong with your system software ore you may have not enough memory for Audacity to work.

thank you so much. I have tried the first option with no success. I’ll try the second one and let you know.
