Working with 2 voice tracks for a podcast

Embarrassingly basic question: What’s the most efficient way to delete a few seconds of input from only one track while keeping the two tracks aligned?

Select the audio you want to “delete” then click the Generate menu and then click Silence.

Thanks for your reply. Will that technique be noticeable if absolute silence is briefly replacing room tone on one of the tracks? Is there an alternative way to keep the tracks aligned (i.e., not collapse the track from which I’ve cut something) while leaving the other track alone?

There is probably more than one solution but you could make a 3rd room tone track and fade it in-and-out.

Insert Silence overwrites the selection so it doesn’t change the timing.

Select the track by clicking the track name above the waveform before selecting the portion of the audio waveform.

If you have a stereo track, click the 3 little dots to left of the waveform and Split Stereo Track so you can edit left & right separately.

That is exactly what I do, and I don’t have to fade it in and out. It is quieter than the rest of the audio, so it just gets covered up.

This is especially useful when you use the AI noise removal, because it regularly drops the audio to silence very abruptly.

This is very helpful. If I copy a stretch of room tone and use it to create a third track, is there then an easy way to paste in a segment of just the right length to replace whatever I’ve cut from one of the voice tracks?

Someone posted something about doing exactly that recently. When I have some time I will look for it. If you have more than a couple (like when using the AI background remover), it will be a burden to do it that way.

I found it easier to just load a 3 hour long ambient sound file and then split the clip where the other tracks end and then delete the rest of the ambient sound. It’s not actually room noise. I recorded birds and nature sounds in my backyard early one morning. It makes it appear like we recorded the podcast outside.

This is the post about inserting room tone into a selection.

I’ll look into this plugin; thanks so much. But surely the task I’m describing – replacing x seconds cut from a track with room tone - is so common that there must be a way to do it without a plugin, right?

The most efficient way to delete a few seconds from only one track while keeping both tracks aligned is to replace the unwanted audio with silence instead of deleting it. By silencing the selected portion, the track’s length stays the same, preventing it from shifting and keeping everything perfectly in sync with the other track.
