Windows 8 and the dreaded Error While Opening message

Hi all,

New here, but have been thoroughly researching my problem prior to posting.

I’m using Windows 8 and getting the dreaded “Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sample rate.” message.

I’ve researched this error message extensively and seem to have done everything in the Wiki that I’m supposed to do to try to alleviate the problem. All the rates seem to match in Audacity and my device, I’ve unchecked the two Transport settings and have up-to-date drivers. Yet I still get this error message.

I cannot find definitively that my sound card supports simultaneous play and recording, although I suspect it is capable. I have a Realtek High Definition Audio sound card in my Toshiba C855D-S5307 laptop. I have Audacity version 2.0.03.

Any ideas would be welcome. I’m trying to completely convert from my desktop (where everything works fine) to my laptop for all my computing needs and this is one of the final hurdles I must overcome.

Thanks in advance.

I don’t use Windows, but there is this advice in the FAQ: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/FAQ:Recording_-_Troubleshooting#vista_7
