Windows 7 - Audacity 2.0.4 - cannot find FFmpeg

My program was working fine relating to FFMpeg until about a week ago. Now it will not import m4a files and says it cannot locate the ffmpeg file. I browse to the file, select it, click OK, then try to import the ffmpeg file and it still says the same thing.

The only way I’ve found to make it work at all is to browse to the ffmpeg file, select it, choose OK, then save my project and close Audacity.

When I reopen Audacity I am able to import m4a files. But I’ve not found this to be a permanent solution. Next time I open the program, it may work and it may not - and I have to do the same thing again.

Any suggestions? Any fix to this?

I think the first thing I would do is cast off Audacity 2.0.4. Get Audacity 2.0.6 from here.

During the installer, it will ask you if you want to reset Audacity as well as reinstall. Say yes.

Are you talking here about browsing to FFmpeg in Libraries Preferences?

I agree with Koz you should upgrade to 2.0.6. You’ll need a new version of FFmpeg for 2.0.6 - instructions are at Audacity Manual.

I have updated to the most recent version and am still having this problem. It cannot find the .dll file needed. I browse to it, select it, say “OK” and it still won’t import m4a files (for example). Any ideas?

If you have updated to Audacity 2.0.6 you also need to update to FFmpeg 2.2.2 from Audacity Manual.

If the Libraries Preferences say that the library is not found, then you can’t import M4A files or other files depending on FFmpeg.

If the problem persists after following all the steps in the FAQ above, please attach the log file from Help > Show Log… top right of Audacity.
