Windows 11- Audacity 3.7.3 - Nothing happens when I try to record or play, and upon clicking anywhere in the Audacity window, Audacity freezes

When I click the Record button or the Play button at the top-left of the screen, nothing happens. Similarly, if I use the menu options to record or play nothing happens. After that, when I click anywhere on the screen, Audacity freezes and the window shrinks to about half the size. (I mean click anywhere, on the menu bar, in the blank window, wherever.)
I can work with menu items and dialog boxes, I can import MP3 files, generate a rhythm track, change preferences, whatever. But as soon as I record or play, nothing happens.
I have uninstalled Audacity and reinstalled the latest version. I also started and stopped the PC. Neither of those helped.
This might be related to recovering a project. The first time this happened, Audacity crashed (I don’t remember why), and the problem occurred after the recovery dialog. I found an aup3 file in a local (not “Programs”) folder. I deleted it and the problem went away. I thought I was all good.
This time, I was using the Latency macro and Audacity crashed. Upon recovery, the problem was back. I don’t think the problem is with the Latency macro because it happened before when I didn’t even know the Latency macro existed.
I have tried every option available with the recovery dialog; saving, not saving, skipping, and so on. It seems to work, it saves when told to, it moves right along when told not to, but after that, all it takes is a click on the Record or Play button to freeze it.

Me again. I tried choosing to save to the cloud, and the problem has gone away. I made a recording, did a hold-my-finger-on-the-power-button shutdown, started Audacity, got the recover dialog, chose to discard the project, and it now it works.
I think this might be coincidental, but I will report back if the problem returns.
