I have Audacity 2.0.6 and have recently upgraded to windows 10. Since I have doen this I have noticed that Audacity runs for a short while and the freezes (not responding) with the error message "Error while opening sound device. Please check the playback device settings and the project sample rate)
The only way I can get it to work is to shut down and restart which makes me very frustrated. I’m not a techy person and need some clear advice/instructions on how to solve this issue. Many thanks
Have you seen this post: https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/windows-10-audacity-internal-portaudio-error-or-no-devices/39353/1
I don’t use Windows, but my guess is that the problem is your sound card drivers need to be updated to Windows 10 drivers (if available).
There is a detailed article about updating the sound card drivers here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Updating_Sound_Device_Drivers
Can you roll the machine back? Audacity doesn’t directly support Win10.

There is another link here which is probably the best one for advice about acquiring Windows 10 drivers: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Windows_10_OS.
As it says there, the first step is to look on the web site of the computer or motherboard manufacturer for the latest Windows 10 audio drivers intended for your computer model.
If you still have this problem after trying to update to Windows 10 compatible drivers, please post the information from Help > Audio Device Info… in the Audacity menu bar so we can see what playback device you are trying to use.
If it’s a playback device connected by USB cable, you should try another cable (make sure the cable is connected tightly at both ends). Use the Win + X menu to shut down Windows and then restart the computer.
If you are changing project rate bottom left of Audacity this could potentially cause “Error opening” for playback or recording devices.
