Will VST Instruments ever be compatible? If not, why? Just c

Hello,

I only found out about VST instruments recently. I’m wondering, since Audacity is compatible with so many VST plug-ins already, whether a future release will be compatible with VST Instrument plug-ins? I’m interested because I hope to one day create my own music for a game I intend to build, and these plug-ins would be extremely useful to me. The only other editor I know of that uses them requires me to pay to use the product in a commercial production, however, so that’s not on the cards at the present time.

If this is not possible, is there a reason? Are the VSTs commercial? I admit I haven’t looked them up specifically yet, so don’t know for certain. If there is some other plug-in I could use to create instrumental sounds that Audacity is compatible with, please let me know.

Probably not in the near future.
Most VST instruments are controlled by MIDI messages, and Audacity does not support playing or recording MIDI, so there would be a lot of infrastructure development required before VSTi support can be considered.

Just about any standalone instrument, or VST instruments playing in a separate host program can be recorded using the WASAPI loopback method described here: Audacity Manual
