wierd error on linux mint

I get the following error whenever I try to run audacity on Linux mint 17.3 ‘Rosa’ MATE machine.

(Audacity:22929): Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_widget_get_direction: assertion ‘GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)’ failed

I am a total newbie and I would like any help I can get. If you need anymore information just ask. Cheers!

Does anything bad happen in Audacity? What version of Audacity are you using (all three numbers) and where did you obtain it from? Please see the pink panel at the top of the page.
