Why can't I listen to USB input w/o Audacity

I have a turntable with USB output. The only way I can hear anything is by opening Audacity and selecting the play thru option.
Is there any way to configure Windows 7 to let me simply hear my records w/o using Audacity?

Barring that, is there another simple minded program I can use instead of Audacity.
I only need Audacity when I edit my audio.

thanks,

You should be able to open the Window Control Panels and tell them to route the turntable sound to the speakers.

I hear nothing when I do that.

I’m not a Windows Elf. We need to wait for one of those.

Right-click over the speaker icon by the system clock, then choose “Recording Devices”. Right-click over the USB turntable CODEC then choose “Properties”. Then click the "Listen " tab and put a tick (checkmark) in “Listen to this device”. Choose the playback device to send the input to. OK and OK.

Then unmute your chosen playback device.
