why can't i hear what i am recording?

Dear All,
Windows 7 ultimate. Audacity version is 2.1.0. Have got .exe installer.
I am trying to record my voice through microphone.
I have gone through tutorials and done accordingly…But unable to hear what i am recording. Have checked volume mixer, sound settings(microphone for recording is on with highest volume) etc…But do note i don’t find anything in my waveform when i am playing my recording, its a straight line.
Thanks,
chinkmyst

That’s quite old. The current version is 2.1.3 and is available here: Audacity ® | Downloads

What sort of microphone? How is the mic attached to the computer?

Dear Steve,
I am using mobile earphones with mic(samsung). Plugged in the jack for mic…

Thanks,
chinkmyst

Is that one jack for mic and headphones combined, or two jacks, one for mic and one for headphones?

Are you recording on a laptop or a full size computer?
What audio jack sockets does it have? Does it have two jack sockets, one for mic and one for headphones, or one socket for mic and headphones combined, or one socket for headphones only?

With your headset plugged in, if you look in the recording tab of the Windows Sound Control Panel and talk into the mic, do you see a green meter jigging up and down as you speak?

I am using Compaq presario C700 laptop, and i have 2 separate jacks for headphones and mic.

When i look in the recording tab of the Windows Sound Control Panel and talk into the mic, i don’t see a green meter jigging up and down as I speak. But the microphone is working as i use in my mobile.

That suggests that your sound card is not working correctly (probably just a setting).

Check the obvious and easiest first:

  • Check that the two plugs are in the correct sockets and seated firmly.
  • Reboot the computer and check in the Windows Sound Control Panel again.

Assuming that’s not fixed it, please post a screen shot of the Recording tab of your Windows Sound Control Panel (with the headset connected).

Another thought - do the headphones work if you play a media file with Windows Media Player?
