When I record, the new clip starts recording randomly in the middle

So, I have selected my track, and have placed a line by clicking the cursor once in my track placement, where I want it to begin recording.
I press the red dot and the clip magically starts recording somewhere in the middle of the track. So I record there. Because I have to.
And then I drag the piece manually to the the destination, fortunately I recall where exactly that is.
Since I can’t drag through frames, I have to drag. stop. scroll. drag. stop. scroll. If I zoom out enough I can see the whole project (7 minutes) I cannot get a hand to appear since the clip is so small.

Am I doing this the HARD way? What do I do to make it record exactly where I want it to?
Thank you kindly, KA

Note that under Edit > Preferences > Recording, you can change the default behavior of Audacity to record on a new track. Or you can hold the shift button to record on a new track. This may or may not be helpful to you. For further information see: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/recording.html

So to drag a very very small clip to exactly where you want it, simply click where you want it, then Ctrl+B will create a label at that point. When you move the clip to that location, a yellow guide line will appear exactly at that point. See: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/boundary_snap_guides.html
