I had an older version of Audacity 3.5.1 and suddenly on a long narration it ‘stopped responding’ to edits. I can still listen and it records, just no editing or it goes into unresponsive mode.
I thought ok maybe its too long 1.5 hrs. Had only 1-2 pages left before this started happening thank the Gods so I finished that section.
I thought ok maybe its because I haven’t updated to the newer version of Audacity,…so I did that. Nope doing the same thing. When I try to edit it just sits there spinning around unresponsive. I see where someone mentioned checking permissions in the actual fileof Audacity itself. I checked all those and all had full permissions. I’m right in the middle of a book. I am panicked here and I have a deadline. Why has this suddenly occurred? Have I accidentally done something wrong? Is this due to automatic updates with Microsoft?

When you make an edit, Audacity makes a safety copy of the whole chapter. If you have to undo the edit, Audacity doesn’t unscramble your edit. It just plays back the last show. This sounds like what happens when Audacity doesn’t have enough room to do that.
Inspect the room on your drive. Audacity likes working on the internal C:\ drive, not external, network, or internet connected drives.
I would do a clean shutdown. Close your applications. Ctrl/Alt/Del and Hold the Shift key while you execute the shutdown.
Not Restart and not regular Shutdown.

This is where you do the special clean shutdown. Even if it doesn’t cure the spicific problem, note any other changes.
There is an info posting for both Windows 10 and 11. I can’t find that one, but this one is for 10.

This one is actually from Microsoft and covers Win 10 and 11.
This doesn’t just neaten up the machine. It can clear out trash left behind from other applications.
It will not, however, reverse any updates or automatic changes. Never do updates in the middle of a production. I understand there are ways to defeat Automatic Windows Stealth Updates.
