I’ve been obsessed with how songs sound on FM radio stations lately and would like to know what plugins/effects can help me achieve that sound or similar? I’ve tried using a VST version of stereo tools and it didn’t give me what I was looking for (if anyone knows any tweaks for the settings, let me know because maybe I’m just not doing it right lol). Any recommendations would be appreciated!
FM radio uses multi-band compression. Free multi-band compressor plug-ins exist, but I don’t speak Mac.
To get a multi-band compressor.
Enable Audio Unit effects at Audacity (menu) > Preferences > Effects.
Add the Audio Unit > Apple > AUMultibandCompressor to the track.
FM radio broadcasts are band-limited to 15 kHz. Add the Audio Unit > Apple > AUGraphicEqualizer and pull the 16 kHz and 20 kHz sliders as low as possible.
Toneboosters FIX v3 plug-in has an FM Radio preset, but it’s a decade old plugin
“Apple Silicon processors (M1, M2, etc) will require that the host program runs in Intel mode (using Rosetta 2).”
Thanks for your response!
Regarding the multiband compressor, do I have to tweak it or use a preset or is it fine the way it is?
Thanks! I’m thinking about pairing this with the AU multiband compressor, adding some pitch/speed, and seeing where it takes me lol.
It only has 4 factory presets. You’ll probably want to tweak it to get the sound you want. There is no “FM” preset.
