i tried Repair but no matter how small I made the sample it wasn’t small enough.

It sounds like there’s a bit of audio missing.
The best you can do with that would be to cut out the bad bit (select and delete) then if necessary use the Repair effect across the join, like this:

thanks, that sounds pretty good, actually. Out of curiosity, what, exactly, did Repair do?

When editing, it can be helpful to select at zero crossings to avoid clicks at the edit points, however even then there may be slight clicks at edit points and the Repair effect can usually fix them. The Repair effect can be used on very short selections (no more than 128 samples) to fix small clicks.
