Waveform / file empty after crash

Hi guys,

I’m new to help forums so i will try to provide as many details as possible.

I’m using Audacity version 2.1.0 and my OS is OS X Yosemite 10.10.5.

I have recorded a set and closed my laptop after. Usually, even after a crash, the files are recovered but not this time.
So after the recovery, there was a error and my file / waveform was completely empty.

I have saved the project with all the hundreds AU files and now i have no idea what to do.

So i hope you guys can help me with my problem here.

Best regards

What were the exact errors in Help > Show Log…? If Audacity is still open, please attach or post the contents of the log.

What does closing the laptop do? Sleep or shut down? If it shuts down, and you had not saved a project yet, then I’m afraid the temporary data is wiped when the computer restarts, assuming you have not changed the default Audacity temporary directory.

If after the recovery you saved the project with empty or silent tracks I am afraid that recording is then saved with empty or silent tracks without any practical way out.

If the recovery is incorrect, you should force quit Audacity then figure the problem out. The force quit preserves the data and the AUTOSAVE file Audacity was trying to recover from. Please see: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/recovery.html.

Hi Gale,

i don’t know what the error said and i think the recording is gone as the waveform is empty after saving.

Thank you for your reply and help.

All the best

If there are no errors in the log after saving or reopening the project, then for all practical purposes I’m afraid that is correct. In that case if you import some of the AU files you will find they are just a flat line.

Usually, even after a crash,

Does it crash all the time?

Yes, good point. If it’s a battery powered Mac, Audacity 2.1.0 or 2.1.1 may be crash prone on Mavericks or later unless you do a simple process - record one track only, export and/or save, quit Audacity.

2.1.2 should be better from that point of view - you can download it here: http://audacityteam.org/download/mac.
