Want ver 2.0.6 back!

Okay, so today I upgraded to 2.1.2 and found that it wasn’t compatible with a hot-key program that I am used to using and wish to revert back to 2.0.6. I am able to use 2.0.6. just fine with 1 major exception, the Apple AU effects no longer work. Is there a fix for this? Please help as soon as you can as my job depends on use of this program in the fashion I am used to.

Thanks!
Jeff

2.0.6 is available from here: http://gaclrecords.org.uk/legacy/
That is an obsolete version. Fixes and updates are provided by updating to the current version.

2.0.6 predates and is not compatible with Yosemite or El Capitan. This will not be fixed because 2.0.6 is an obsolete version. 2.0.6 should work (including Audio Units) on OS X 10.4 to 10.9.

What is the exact problem with shortcuts? Be specific about the shortcut application and the shortcuts concerned. Does this application support El Capitan?

You can change, add or remove Audacity shortcuts at Audacity > Preferences… , Keyboard section.

changing keybinds is not the issue. I constantly use the program Keyboard Maestro which uses scripts to tell Audacity with one keypress, for example, amplify highlighted selection 5dbs. This no longer works because of how the effects are now used in 2.1.2.

I am able to use 2.0.6 and 2.0.1 on El Capitan just fine and everything was going great until I tried to upgrade to 2.1.2. In 2.1.2, the effects did not work until using the ADD/REMOVE effects option in the effects pull down menu. That was when I learned that I could no longer use my shortcuts as before. So I went back to 2.0.6 and learned that I suddenly no longer have access to the APPLE AU effects. Is there a secret setting that 2.1.2 created that I can somehow undo?

Thanks again!

You only have to enable an effect once at Effect > Add / Remove Plug-ins… then you can use your macro or whatever you are using in the same way as before - just make an allowance for the extra Add / Remove menu item, if that is the source of the issue.

There is a way to remove the Add / Remove Plug-ins… item from the Effect Menu in 2.1.1 (but not in 2.1.2) but I would assume that to be more work then modifying your scripts: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/simplifying_audacity.html. Also 2.1.1 release is not currently available from the OldFoss link given on that page - you would have to obtain it from http://www.audacityteam.org/download/legacy-mac/ (DMG only, no ZIP on that page).

Or, try 2.1.0 which does not have that Add / Remove item and should support Apple AU’s. See https://sourceforge.net/projects/audacity/files/audacity/2.1.0/. 2.1.0 does not support El Capitan as well as 2.1.2 does. In particular you will have to install FFmpeg to import Apple audio formats - see https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/audacity-2-1-0-ffmpeg-required-for-mp4-m4a-mov-alac-import/38209/1

Apple AU effects do not work in 2.0.6 on Yosemite or later. They never have and never will. Some non-Apple AU effects “might” work.

Hello again,
I’m sorry to not be clearer about the issue. Okay, so let’s use my example from before. I have a key script for amplifying a section of audio 5dbs. When I press this key, Keyboard Maestro is able to:

1: Select ‘Amplify’ from the ‘Effects’ menu in Audacity
Now before step 2, is the first difference in ver 2.0.6 and 2.1.2. In the older version, this field is already highlighted and can accept a specific number input
2: Type the ‘5’ keystroke
3: Type the ‘.’ keystroke
4: Type the ‘0’ keystroke
5: Type the ‘return’ keystroke
Here’s the second difference of 2.0.6 and 2.1.2. In the older version, a keypress of Return will execute most effects by default. This means that the disruption mentioned earlier, and this one would have to have a key bind script looking like:
1: Select ‘Amplify’ from the ‘Effects’ menu in Audacity
2: Click mouse at (749,334) from the Front Window’s top left corner
2: Type the ‘5’ keystroke
3: Type the ‘.’ keystroke
4: Type the ‘0’ keystroke
5: Click mouse at (846,509) from the Front Window’s top left corner

This would be fine if it consistantly worked but I’m always changing the size of the window I work in and I imagine the effects windows don’t always appear in the exact same coordinates from the Front Window’s top left corner. Or do they? Oh dear goodness! the effects windows may actually be the same size each time and count as the ‘Front Window’.

I really regret in that I did not check this new theory and have since reverted back to Lion. I had only assumed that the effects windows would not be consistently in the same places by default. Perhaps I will give it one more try this weekend.
Thanks for all your help!
Jeff
Audacity Pro and potential-tard

We’ve had lots of problems with keyboard use of Audacity since upgrading to wxWidgets 3.0.2. That change happened in Audacity 2.1.2. One problem has been getting the selection in the first control of the effect while also having focus on the OK button so that ENTER will apply the effect. If you use Audacity 2.1.0 or 2.1.1 these problems don’t occur. You could probably use that reasonably well on El Capitan and Apple AU’s would work.

In 2.1.3-alpha we now have focus on OK but we don’t have selection in the first control. You can still TAB or SHIFT-TAB to the control you require then you don’t need to worry about the window size. If you want to try 2.1.3-alpha, it’s here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Nightly_Builds#mac.

If you stay with Lion then ultimately of course you won’t be able to upgrade Audacity version because sooner or later we will drop support for Lion.

Hey again,
I just wanted to follow up and thank you for your help… I decided to give it another go and have revamped my keyboard scripts to work with everything I used to do in Audacity 2.0.1. The workaround was in calculating where each button press was to be placed in the tricky ones like amplification of a certain amount. Referring back to my previous example of raising a section of selected audio 5dbs now looks like this:

1: Select ‘Amplify’ from the ‘Effects’ menu in Audacity
2: Move and Click Mouse at (-180,-162) from the Front Window’s bottom right corner
3: Move and Click Mouse at (-180,-162) from the Front Window’s bottom right corner (doubled to highlight the numbers in the field)
4: Type the ‘5’ keystroke
5: Type the ‘.’ keystroke
6: Type the ‘0’ keystroke
7: Type the ‘return’ keystroke

Now the only wonky thing left is the new version of the Apple Matrix Reverb. It works fine and I am getting used to the new setup, but how come this seems to be the only effect (at least that i’ve come across yet), with a choice of CLOSE and APPLY at the bottom, instead of CANCEL and OK? The main difference being that once a reverb is applied, the window is still in the way… uggg! extra steps!!! Is there by chance a work around to this?
Thanks!!!
Jeff

VST, LADSPA, LV2, AU and a couple of built-in effects support “real-time preview”. This means that you can adjust the effects controls while listening to the preview, which can be very much easier when tweaking the parameters than “try settings, undo, tweak settings, undo, tweak some more …”. Real time preview allows you to preview the entire track, or just part of it, then the effect is applied when you click the Apply button.

See here for more information: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/real_time_preview_of_effects.html

I think I still like 2.0.6 better. Overall it just felt snappier and more responsive. Of course, if you were to add the ability to change waveform colors and text colors, that would be worth the extra hiccups I’ve experienced. One of which is the shift-scroll wheel combo which inconsistently changes the direction of the shift. (sometimes scrolling up moves to the right, sometimes left). Also on my gripe list, if you don’t mind indulging me, is the inability to copy/paste anything in the Export audio window. (Paste does work in the meta data area but copy does not (instead it seems to clear the field)

Anyways, so much to get used to… time for me to start feeling comfy soon.
Thanks again!
Jeff

2.1.3 when released will respect the scroll direction you have set in the system mouse or trackpad references. If you are using a trackpad, you won’t need to hold SHIFT to scroll horizontally.

That is another issue that directly stems from the transition to wxWidgets 3 made in Audacity 2.1.2. This will probably be partly addressed in 2.1.3 when released, however until then you can still in 2.1.2 right-click or CTRL-click the text field then copy or paste.

Gale

Sorry got one more, dragging and dropping audio files into 2.1.2 doesn’t open them into the mix like before

Thanks!
Jeff

That’s fixed in the next Audacity release.
