I have been experimenting and am successful in voice recording.How do I turn off the sound to my headset so I do not hear my own words echoing in my ear,as I am recording.Any help would be appreciated.
In the Transport menu, ensure that “Software Playthrough” is off (not selected).

Do you mean it was checked “on”, so it was the cause of the problem? 
It would have helped if you gave your version of Audacity and Windows (see the pink panel at the top of the page). If you are on Vista or later, there may be a “Listen to this device” setting in Windows Sound that is also software playthrough. It would be on the “Recording” tab, then select the headset and click “Properties”.
It this is still a problem, also give us the make and model number of the headset.
