You might benefit from this page I wrote yesterday for the soon to be upcoming Audacity 3.0.1:
https://alphamanual.audacityteam.org/man/Updating_from_Audacity_2.x_to_Audacity_3.x
and its sister page:
https://alphamanual.audacityteam.org/man/Audacity_2.x_AUP_Projects
Basically older projects from 2.4.x (or earlier are in two part
- an AUP file - effectively the project manager
- a _data folder which contains the audio data broken up into 6 second snippets of sound
You need both in order to be able to open an AUP project (in 2.4.x or 3.0.0). When you successfully open it in 3.0.0 a copy of the project is created in the new consolidated single AUP3 project file.
