Unable to save as .AU or .AUP files

I’m new to Audacity (2.3.3). All is fine when I export my recordings as MP3 files. However I’m unable to go back and edit tracks because Windows 10 saves the files as Windows media files (lots of small ones). In my App default settings Audacity seems to be aligned with .AUP files but there is no sign of these in my Audacity data files. Any suggestions?

the .aup file (effectively the data manager) sits alongside the projects data folder - thy must both be in the same folder.

I’ve now managed to open the .au files with Audacity as opposed to Windows Media Payer (I did this by installing a second version of Audacity via the Microsoft Store, so it now comes up in the ‘open with’ options). However my project data folders still contains just three lots of tiny fragments - nothing that I can use to carry on working on projects. Any suggestions?

You need to open the .aup file NOT the individual .au files in the folder - you should leave the project folder well alone, it’s the job of the project’s .aup file to manage the contents of the folder.

Thanks WC. The problem seems to be that when I save an Audacity project I don’t get an .aup file, just the .au files. For example, I saved a recent recording to my desktop, I then moved the folder to my documents. It shows as songname_data. It opens to another folder called e08. This opens to three more folders: d00; d01 and d08. Each of these contains short music fragments as .au files. Unfortunately no sign of any .aup files.

You can’t just move the folder - you would need to move its associated .aup file along with it.

It’s the same whether I move the folder or not - no sign of .aup files. However, I’ve just tried a Windows search for .aup and they come up - so that’s a relief. I can now re-edit my projects and find the files when I need them. I would be nice to know what my Windows 10 is up to, maybe it’s something to do with Onedrive…
