Unable to record - no stereo mix Win8

Using Win8 and Audacity 2.0.3. I’ve just refreshed my Win8 installation after a BSOD. I recall having the same issue with getting Stereo Mix to appear the first time I installed Audacity (before the BSOD). At that time I found some guidance on making hidden devices appear and eventually got it to work. I can’t locate that advice and I’ve been through everything I can think of

  1. Updated the driver from device manager … that caused the RealTek HD driver to be installed
  2. Checked that hidden devices were displayed and none disabled

Help please … what am I missing

Was that on the same machine with the same version of Windows? Some PCs just don’t have “Stereo Mix” but if you had it previously on the same hardware with the same version of Windows then hopefully we’ll be able to get it back.

By default Windows will use its own version of the drivers, but generally it is better to use the drivers from the manufacturers web site. If your computer is a named brand, then try installing the drivers for your machine and version of Windows from the manufacturers web site. If it’s a home build PC, try the drivers from the board manufacturer’s web site.
