Unable to load files after re-naming

I am using Audacity 2.0.5 on Windows Vista Home premium v 6.0.

Apologies if this question has been answered elsewhere, I couldn’t find it by searching.

I am panicking because I seem to have deleted or made unplayable a podcast I have been working on for some time.

I am not sure if it may be to do with the fact that I renamed the recording last time I was logged in and working on it. The podcast was originally titled “Ep 1 - Tom Taylor and Conan the Barbarian”. The data folder has the same name as well. When I worked on it last time, I thought it would be best to start a new file as I worked on editing. Given it was my first time editing on Audacity, I wanted to maintain the original recording in case I stuffed it up. So I copied the file and added “-edited version” to the title. I added “- original recording” to the original version. I am not sure if the issue is that the data file now has a different name to the audio files.

When I attempt to open the edited version, I get an Error Opening Project message saying that the project data folder could not be found.

When I attempt to open the original version, I get a Warning - Missing Audio Data Block File(s) message.

I would really appreciate any help that you could provide on recovering either or both of the audio files. A lot of work has gone into the podcast so it would be shattering to lose it all.

To make a series of projects for each stage of editing, always use File > Save Project As… . This leaves you working on the current state of the project you just saved and closes the previous version as it was last saved.

Never do file and folder copy in the same folder. If you must do file and folder copy, make a new folder for the new copy of AUP and _data folder. This lets AUP file and _data folder retain their original names, which the AUP file will still be assuming.

Please see: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/faq_opening_and_saving_files.html#backup .

The AUP file must have the same name as the _data folder, and “projname” in the AUP file must point to that same _data folder.

Please see:http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/audacity_projects.html .

Please attach both AUP files. Please see here for how to attach files: https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/how-to-attach-files-to-forum-posts/24026/1 .

Also close and restart Audacity, then after opening both AUP’s, save and attach the log file from Help > Show Log… . Don’t save projects with incorrect audio and don’t replace with silence permanently.

Cheers Gale. I will be sure to use ‘save as’ in future when creating different versions.

I have attached the 2 AUP files. The data folder is called “Ep 1 - Tom Taylor and Conan the Barbarian_data”.

I have also attached the log file for the original recording. I could not open the edited version at all so could not get a log file for that one. Obviously it would be great if I could recover the edited version, but it is only a little additional work on top of the original one.
Original file log.txt (72.7 KB)
Ep 1 - Tom Taylor and Conan the Barbarian - original recording.aup (66.7 KB)
Ep 1 - Tom Taylor and Conan the Barbarian - edited version.aup (67.1 KB)

“Ep 1 - Tom Taylor and Conan the Barbarian - edited version.aup” should now open if you rename “Ep 1 - Tom Taylor and Conan the Barbarian_data” to “Ep 1 - Tom Taylor and Conan the Barbarian - edited version_data” and have both the AUP and the _data folder in the same folder.

“Ep 1 - Tom Taylor and Conan the Barbarian - original recording.aup” should now open if you rename “Ep 1 - Tom Taylor and Conan the Barbarian_data” to "Ep 1 - Tom Taylor and Conan the Barbarian - original recording_data and have both the AUP and the _data folder in the same folder.

The AUP file must not be in the _data folder.

Please tell us the exact error message and present the log again if neither project opens correctly.

Gale, thanks so much. That has worked perfectly (took me so long to try cause I had to get a hold of a USB to back it all up).

Can’t tell you how much I appreciate it. Cheers mate.
