I made a number of recordings and saved in audacity to edit later. I saved them both as “aup” files and exported as “mp3”. When I go back to edit the “aup” files they open but it is not possible to edit or play them. The mp3 files will play but then I can’t edit them. Does anyone know what the issue might be?
Why do you say that ?
Are these .aup project files requiring associated _data directories created with an older version of Audacity 2.4.2 and prior, or .aup3 project files with the unified file structure introduced in Audacity 3.0.0 and later.
Note: older versions of Audacity are available here: Old Audacity versions download
AUP and AUP3 files are “more complicated” than regular audio files (WAV FLAC, MP3, etc.) and there is more that can go wrong.
If you are recording it’s always a good idea to make a WAV or FLAC file immediately after recording (and make back-ups of that if it’s something super-critical).
MP3 is “better than nothing” but it’s lossy compression so if you want MP3 it’s best to convert to MP3 once as the last step after all editing is done.
…I rarely make Audacity project files but you may need to, depending on what you’re doing.
AUP3 files only work on NTFS drives and you might have trouble with a USB thumb drive or a “cloud” drive. If the file is stored somewhere else and that’s the only problem, copying it to your local (NTFS) hard drive should allow you to open it.
There are some recovery methods but someone else will have to help you with that.
