Typing in labels not working

I’ve been having an issue recently where sometimes I won’t be able to type in labels in Audacity. I’ll create a label as usual, but even when focused on the label text field, letters won’t show up and will start triggering other shortcuts, which is very frustrating as someone who has a label-heavy workflow. Restarting Audacity fixes the problem, as does toggling the “Type to create labels” setting off and on again (this issue occurs both with that setting off and on, but switching it or checking and then unchecking it seems to make labels work again). I do not usually have the setting for creating new labels with a dialog on, however, that always works.

This issue seems in my experience to be correlated with pasting audio from one project to another. I can pretty consistently replicate the issue by opening two Audacity projects, pasting a chunk of audio from one project into another, and then hitting Ctrl + B to create a label and starting to type as usual, but it will not register.

I’m getting this problem both in Audacity 2.4.2 and Audacity 3.4.2, in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. Also happens for me in Windows 10.

As a workaround, you may have a text file with all your labels. Copy the desired text, and then insert it as a label.
