Trying to Record A Mix

Hi I want to record a mix that I am doing on Audacity. I was able to do this using the internal microphone but there is a lot of air in the recording. When I tried to do this by turning off the internal mic, it starts recording but the sound isn’t registering as the levels remain at zero. What am I doing wrong? I want to make note in advance that I may be the most computer illiterate person on this board so be gentle and clear. Thanks.
