Which version of Audacity are you using? What is your operating system?
What is your ultimate aim in trying to open a video file in an audio editor?
Mark B
Well, the program *Сan open video files, for example mp4, of course only The Sound Itself.
Latest version 3.7.4-64bit. Windows 10 Pro 22H2 64bit.
You need FFmpeg for most audio/video formats.
BUT that’s unlikely to help with a crash. You’ll probably have to find another tool.
MKVtools might be able to extract the audio but I don’t know much about Matroska…
Or XMedia Recode can do all kinds of conversion & extraction.
Or if you can play it in VLC player, VLC player can extract audio to WAV, etc.
Or Audacity can Record whatever’s playing on your computer. (I think it only works with stereo, not multi-channel surround.)
Agreed but it doesn’t really answer my question. I was just trying to think if there was another way of doing what you’re doing since you are getting an error. For example, if you just want the audio extracting from it maybe ffmpeg might work. How big is the mkv file?

03:33 long
Knowing that Audacity opens audio from video files, I decided to do just that, because before that I had no problems with mp4 videos
3:33 long and the size is 36mb
Oh, that’s fairly small then. Do you want me to have a go with my setup and see I how get on? You can either upload it to Google Drive and share the link if you have a Google account or send it to me via SwissTransfer, which is free and safe. I’ll send you a private message with my email address.
