Too high a recording level

Hi there,

I’m working with Audacity 2.05 on windows 7.
I’ve recently recorded an interview via Skype and now having opened it up with audacity I can see it’s recorded at too high a level - I know, amateur! The ‘s’ are very exaggerated and it sounds tinny and basically just awful. Is there anything I can do? I’ve tried reducing the amplification and it helps a bit but not ideal. Thank you for your help!
Chris

I’ve tried reducing the amplification and it helps a bit but not ideal.

I’m sure you can get it as quiet as you want with the Amplify effect, but that doesn’t remove any existing distortion.

You can try the Clip Fix effect to reduce the clipping (overload distortion), but there are limits to what you can accomplish. (When a waveform is clipped the information is permanently lost and there is just no way of knowing the shape or height of the original wave.)
