I seached for tinnitus discussions. Someone was able to generate something that sounded like their tinnitus. Others discussed generating masking noise. I could not find what I needed,
My question is a request: Can someone savvy please add an option that can help us generate our own tinnitus sound? In my case it’s a complex high-frequency noise including something like a tone in it …
It may help others to understand what I hear.
Cheers and thanks!
Generate → Tone or Generate → Noise.
You can try sine waves or square waves (or other wave shapes). But at very-high frequencies it will make little or no difference. These other wave shapes contain harmonics and for example, the 1st harmonic of 10kHz is 20kHz and most people can’t hear that high so at some point everything sounds like a sine wave.
It’s going to require some tricky trial-and-error to create what you’re hearing.
To generate multiple tones, go to Tracks → Add New → Generate…
When you play or export, multiple tracks will be mixed (summed). So to prevent clipping you’ll need make sure the combined amplitudes don’t exceed 1.0. Clipping also creates harmonics (distortion) but Audacity itself doesn’t have any limits internally so it won’t clip until you export or unless you play it a full-volume and clip your DAC. (If the total mix goes over 0dBFS (=1.0 =100%) it may sound different after exporting)
…Be careful with “loud” high frequency test tones if you are playing though your stereo system. Tweeters can’t handle as much power as woofers and constant test tones have higher average power than regular program material. You can fry a tweeter with tones that sound weak or are too high to hear!
There’s an app for that … AudioNotch - Tinnitus Treatment Sound Therapy - Tuner and Tone Generator
