Sudden force close on Open to import a file [SOLVED]

Hi there.

I have been using audacity for years and I have never experienced this before. Whenever I attempt to open a file (after i click “Open”) after a few seconds, the whole program pretty much collapses in on itself, and I receive no error message.

I’ve tried re-installing the program (I have the latest version, 2.1.2) and shutting down any programs that are not in use. I don’t think it’s my anti-virus, because even when I disable it, the issue still occurs.
I also have plenty of disk space left, although I am currently trying to uninstall some programs I don’t need that take up at least 3 GB of memory.

If anybody knows how to fix this please let my know as soon as you can. Thank you for your time.

Win-8.1
Audacity version 2.1.2

At the risk of sounding like a Telephone Service Responder, you did restart the machine from a dead stop somewhere in there, right?

at least 3 GB of memory.

That’s not a lot of drive space. What are the specifications of your hard drive? Size, Used, Remaining, etc.

How long are the shows? You can dig yourself a hole very quickly with multi-hour long shows. Did the failed shows used to open?

Does the Audacity interface turns white and you have to force quit? Or does Audacity disappear of its own accord?

What file are you opening? A three-hour WAV file, an Audacity project or …? Where is the file stored on your computer?

Did you Reset Preferences when you reinstalled Audacity? If not, please try that.

267 GB free of 445 GB of drive space
I don’t believe the files are the problem, because I’m unable to open them because Audacity closes out completely before I get to double click the file.

@Gale

While searching for the file I want to open, which don’t take up a lot of space, the whole program exits. There’s no sight of it turning white or an error message, it just completely disappears.
I’ll see if resetting preferences will work.

Thank you for your time.

Back again, thank you Gale, your suggestion worked.
