"Straight Across" Transfer

I may have lead one of the posters down the garden pathway. He wanted to convert a 44100, 16 AIFF to 44100, 16 WAV. I told him to set Audacity to 44100, 16-bit, open the show and export in the new format.

That’s not strictly true, is it? Audacity always goes to 32-bit in the middle thus giving you two conversion errors.

Conversion from 16 bit to 32 bit float is lossless.

In Audacity 1.3.x when importing Audacity will use whichever is the higher quality of a) the file bit depth or b) the Quality setting in Preferences.

In Audacity 1.3.x, when Exporting, the audio is “rendered” at 32 bit, so if exporting to a 16 bit format dither will be applied as set in Preferences.
