Stereo to mono, track goes chipmunky

Windows edition: 8.1
Audacity: 2.1.1

Hey all,

I have a conversation I recorded over skype. It’s recorded as a stereo track. When I attempt to convert it to mono the length of the track shrinks by approximately 2/3rds, and everyone goes to sounding like they’re talking in chipmunk.

Does anyone have any insight into what might be going on here?

Thanks in advance,

Nick

Are you using Tracks > Stereo Track to Mono?

Recording Skype is not particularly easy. How did you do it? Pamela or one of the other Skype Recording Programs?

Assuming that the original stereo track does not sound like chipmunks, you’re doing something wrong in your attempt to convert it to mono. If you describe what you are doing, we can probably tell you what you are doing wrong. Does the stereo track have sound in both left and right channels? Does it have the same sound in both channels? Does it have sound in one channel and silence in the other?

That’s why I decided not to shotgun this post.
